Why is it important to learn how to be a successful immigrant entrepreneur? With the advances of information technology and greater opportunities to develop global business, more and more entrepreneurs are discovering business opportunities in foreign countries. Often, it begins when studying and working abroad, where viable opportunities can be identified and they discover that a living can be made from the use of their skills and knowledge in this new environment. Especially, immigrant entrepreneurs often bring in new business perspectives and ideas to the host country and create job opportunities in a niche area. Although it can still be challenging for immigrant entrepreneurs to adapt to a foreign location, there are numerous success stories showing how immigrant entrepreneurs can succeed in making profitable businesses in the UK.
A recent project led by the University of Salford compiled the views and experience of business students and 200 entrepreneurs from 30 countries, which aimed to identify the key characteristics and attributes for successful immigrant entrepreneurs. The report also illustrated that having significant start-up capital is not essential in terms of setting up a business.
The findings of the project suggested that most immigrant entrepreneurs start with their businesses with very little money. On the contrary, they have good ideas, adequate skills and knowledge, along with determination and a strong work ethic. These advantages help immigrant entrepreneurs stand out in the business community.
The report mentions Dina Railean, an immigrant entrepreneur from Moldova, who set up her own translation and interpreting business in the UK after obtaining two MA degrees from Manchester University. Ms Railena said, “having experience of two different business cultures has given me an advantage in being able to spot opportunities which other people can miss, which I think is one of the key skills of an entrepreneur.” She also mentioned that getting a work permit and visa was her first obstacle when starting her business in the UK. Also mentioned in the report was a story of a French creative entrepreneur who was pleased to find out that the only bureaucracy required in setting up her new graphic design business was to report to the UK tax authority.
The report also summarised the core skills and key industries where immigrant entrepreneurs are working. The major skills and characteristics include industries relating to knowledge, ethnic food, skilled-labour, language, web-enabled, management, networking, and creativity. Those immigrant entrepreneurs possess at least one of the above skills and they know how to exploit them in the relevant industry.
The project manager of the study, Lena Vasilieva commented: “We were impressed and inspired with the drive and commitment these people had to succeed, their determination to learn new skills and new cultures, and their ability to work hard and persevere in the toughest of circumstances.”
