Interior minister Theresa May announced last Wednesday that the UK government is looking at expanding online applications and making some visa forms available in Mandarin, as well as introducing an express service for premium travelers from China.
With regards to the premium services, the travelers may be able to pay some additional fees for expedited service so that their visas may be issued in 3-5 working days. Mrs May also does not rule out the possibility of introducing a 24 hour turnaround service for some visa applications. The streamline of the visa applications will be welcome by the British retailers that are suffering from the UK’s longest recession in 50 years.
A record 149,000 Chinese visitors came to Britain in 2011, bringing some 240 million pounds to the struggling economy. The record also shows that the average Chinese tourist spends about 3 times as much – – 1,600 pounds — as the average visitor to Britain. Meanwhile, the government aims to attract an additional 233,000 Chinese visitors a year by 2020.
